Jim Candido
Jim Candido began his music studies on violin with Paul Brisbane and
Maurice Partnoy, the former concertmaster of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic
in Russia. He also majored in music studies in high school, covering
rudiments, ear training, theory and composition. He began performing
at age 14 with a dance band, playing both violin and trombone. During
a military tour of duty in Germany, he led a jazz quartet, performing
in jazz clubs and officers' clubs. Upon discharge from the USAF, he
began studies on double bass with John Schaeffer, of the New York Philharmonic.
After several years of free lancing in NYC and touring with the Don
Shirley Trio and the Longines Symphonette (The Longines Symphonette
was a prerecorded classical music program broadcast nightly on many
Mutual stations from 1943 to 1949. It then moved to CBS where it was
heard Sundays at 2pm from 1949 to 1957. The initial conductor was Macklin
Marrow, followed for most of the run by Michel Piastro, one-time concert
master of the New York Philharmonic.), he auditioned for an opening
in the NY Philharmonic and was appointed to its bass section in September,
1966, by Leonard Bernstein. During his 38 year tenure with the New York
Philharmonic, he performed over 8000 concerts with the world's greatest
conductors, including the musical directors of the NY Philharmonic,
Bernstein, Szell, Boulez, Mehta, Masur and Mazell. He has performed
with chamber groups throughout Europe and South America, and has appeared
in the world's great concert halls in South America, Canada, Japan,
Korea, China, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Malasia, Singapore,
Thailand, India, Israel, Russia and all of Europe. He also performed
at the White House in 1984. His retirement from the NY Philharmonic
in 2003 resulted in a move to Wallace, NC. At present he is still performing
with The Tallis Chamber Orchestra and local symphonies, such as Fayetteville
and Wilmington.
